Cutting Room Floor: Iron Triangle Brewing Co.

On occasion it's fun to go back and examine some work that didn't quite make the cut. Roughly a year ago, while an art director at The Brandit, I began working on an identity system for Iron Triangle Brewing Co. in Los Angeles. Thematically, they were very interested in the story of Milliam Mulholland, Fredrick Eaton, and Joseph Lippincot: the three men who built the LA aqueduct at the turn of the 20th century. They wanted to make sure that the imagery of the aqueduct was somewhat visible, or at least homaged in the creation of the artwork. Creating a suite of icons and logos was important, as well.

I ran across it an early version of the identity system that didn't make it past the second round, and thought it was really cool. The name "Iron Triangle" combined with the imagery of an aqueduct made for a conceptual challenge, and the linkage of two strong geometric shapes is an elegant way to square, or triangle, that circle. Negative space at the linking points creates a swirling effect, reminiscent of water propelled through a tube.

“William Mulholland was a self-educated man, but in 1914 the University of California at Berkeley bestowed on him an honorary doctorate degree. The inscription on the diploma read ‘Percussit saxa et duxit flumina ad terram sitientum’ (He broke the rocks and brought the river to the thirsty land).”

During the research phase, we found this interesting bit about William Mulholland. The inscription is wrapped around the tertiary logo, which was intended as an interesting button, or perhaps even embossed on the bottom of the bottle if we pursued custom glassware. One version utilized the original latin, for even more classic character. The secondary logo feels the most like swirling water, and was to be used as the crown.

The identity system works especially well on black.

Friendly Press for King's Sandwich Shop

Image from News & Observer

Image from News & Observer

At the corner of Foster and Geer Streets just north of downtown Durham, North Carolina, you will find an unassuming cinderblock shed with red awnings and a Coca-Cola sign at least 50 years old. This is King's Sandwich Shop. Approaching its 75th anniversary, News & Observer ran an article on their latest venture: King's Mobile.

READ THE ARTICLE

I was fortunate enough to meet the owner of King's on one of my many walks to get a shrimp po boy with tater tots and fried okra, ( health shop they are not) and began working with him on a rebrand soon after. In addition to a new logo and identity system, a primary focus was on rolling out the #kingstream: a renovated airstream trailer that functions as the second location, as well as a catering vehicle and special event-mobile.

As the new work is rolled out I'll be updating the portfolio. For now, if you're ever in Durham, be sure to swing by and try a Cack-A-Lacky King or spicy black bean veggie burger.

Santa Maria Brewing Company | Brand Director

The radio silence around here the last few months has good cause. Primarily, Olivia had our second child. Very secondarily, most of my hours were poured into a single project. This is rare for me, but the results so far are entirely worth it.

Last year I flew out to meet with Byron Moles, the owner and president of Santa Maria Brewing Co, in Santa Maria, California. We shared a vision for what the brewery could become, and I decided to contribute my experience in the beer industry to growing this brand. Here is a taste of what we've been working on.

Here we are in Costco.

Working with Byron and the team is very rewarding, and I'm excited to see this brand continue to grow. Hopefully cans are on the horizon for 2017, but next up: the Santa Maria website.

Nickelfish Internal Projects

As many of you know, I had a wonderful experience working at Nickelfish, and left it for my new home in North Carolina a few months ago. While cleaning out old project folders on my computer I uncovered a few internal projects that never quite made the portfolio...

N.I.P.P.S

The National Identity & Publication Protection Service is an internal project designed to poke fun at government agencies / design firms that tend to defend the status quo. This was only one part of a larger ad campaign, but the mark we invented was pretty fun.

League of Heroes

If you've been to the Nickelfish website, you've seen the image of the staff as their superhero alter egos. We invented a logo to use with these characters, but it has yet to be utilized in its fullest form.

Bombadil Battalion

Shortly before I left, Nickelfish split their staff into three production teams, each with some sort of hilarious name. Our team name was Bombadil Battalion, after the famed Tom Bombadil of The Fellowship of the ring. A team logo was also charged, and I included the feathered cap, beer stein, and music note as symbols of our patron saint.

Blowing Minds Since 2002

This last project was simply a t-shirt design we developed for our own team. Internal stuff like this is usually a ton of fun, and every once and a while you have to work on something that distracts from the day-to-day.
